Intelligent Automation: What It Is and How It Differs From RPA and Digital Process Automation

2 min read · Updated Mon Oct 26

Intelligent automation (IA) is the combination of three things: workflow orchestration (the process backbone), RPA or API integrations (the hands), and AI (the eyes and judgement). Together they can automate processes that older rule-only automation couldn't touch, because real business data is messy.

The building blocks

  1. Digital process automation (DPA). Defines the workflow: steps, owners, approvals, SLAs, escalations.
  2. RPA / integrations. Moves data and triggers actions in your systems.
  3. AI. Reads documents, classifies emails, extracts fields, summarises cases, drafts replies.
  4. Human-in-the-loop review. Low-confidence cases go to a person, and their corrections make the system better.

Intelligent document automation

The most common starting point is intelligent document automation: taking invoices, claims forms, contracts, KYC documents or purchase orders and turning them into clean structured data. A good pipeline does five things: ingest, classify, extract, validate against business rules, and route exceptions to a reviewer. Modern language models handle layouts that used to need a template per vendor.

Examples that pay off

  • Accounts payable: invoice in, fields extracted, matched against PO, posted to the ERP.
  • Customer support: emails triaged, answers drafted from your knowledge base, humans approve.
  • Onboarding: documents collected, verified, accounts created across systems.
  • Operations reporting: data pulled from several tools into one daily summary.

What goes wrong

Teams usually fail by automating a broken process, skipping exception handling, or letting AI make unreviewed decisions where mistakes are expensive. Start narrow, measure accuracy on real documents, and widen the scope only when the numbers justify it.

Where to start

Pick one process with clear volume and an obvious owner. Score it with the automation readiness check. If it scores well, a working pilot can be built in weeks, not quarters. I build these end to end. Tell me about your process and we'll scope a pilot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between RPA and intelligent automation?

RPA executes fixed, rule-based steps. Intelligent automation adds AI (document understanding, language models, classification) so the system can handle unstructured inputs and make bounded decisions.

What is digital process automation (DPA)?

DPA focuses on automating end-to-end workflows across people and systems, with forms, approvals and routing. It's the orchestration layer; RPA and AI are often the steps inside it.
